“HOW SHALL I REPAY THE LORD?”

“HOW SHALL I REPAY THE LORD?”

What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?
Psalm 116.12 - NKJV

Every psalm penned by David carries and exudes a lot of His deep and sincere relationship with God. In this psalm in particular, he asks himself how to thank the Lord Who had been His shepherd, friend and companion throughout so many difficult circumstances, how to repay Him for so many benefits.

In this Thanksgiving season, I find it appropriate to see how David himself answered the question he introduces on verse 12, and he presents 3 answers on verse 13:

  1. I will take up the cup of salvation

Free salvation and an eternity spent with God depends on taking the cup of salvation graciously offered by God. To be thankful is to live a lifestyle of receiving thankfully and joyfully all the blessings the Lord bestows upon us. His love is unconditional and His grace is inexhaustible, we just need to extend our hands and take it, in complete surrender.

  1. I will call upon the Name of the Lord

This expression means to have the Lord as the only God in your life, giving Him honor and first place; “calling upon the Lord” means constant and interrupt relationship with Him. David understood this and was able to live a life of intimacy with God, even despite his own flaws and mistakes.

  1. I will pay my vows to the Lord

Life at the altar demands a certain reciprocity of love, and the only way to honor our God is to serve Him with all we are and have. Of course we will never be able to “pay the Lord” for all He does, but we can certainly serve Him with all our soul, spirit and body, as living sacrifices.

Let’s be thankful to our wonderful Lord and Savior!

Wishing many blessings to you and your family!
