DOING WHATEVER I THINK IS RIGHT

DOING WHATEVER I THINK IS RIGHT

“You shall not at all do as we are doing here today - every man
doing whatever is right in his own eyes.”

Deuteronomy 12:8

The Book of Deuteronomy is a review of the Law of God given to the People of Israel in the desert before they crossed the Jordan into the promised land.
The verse above called my attention because today, almost 3500 years after this order was given, it is still a struggle point for many, that is, doing what I want and pleases me, instead of what the Lord commanded me to do.

It is very common to hear people saying “It’s my life and I do with it whatever it pleases me…”
Well, first of all that is not true: Scriptures are clear that our lives do not belong to us, it is a gift from God; as a matter of fact, we do not hold ownership of anything, everything is given to us by grace and favor which we do not deserve.

Second of all, when I think I can do whatever it pleases me, disregarding what the Lord prescripts in His Word, I am rebelling against Him.
We must be very careful about that, because after all the warnings and advices given by Moses, the Bible tells us that, after inheriting the wonderful promised land, the People of Israel still chose to live exactly that dangerous and rebellious lifestyle, as we can read in Judges 21:25, where “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
Yes, we are free, yes we have been called to freedom, but we must be very careful as of how to enjoy that liberty.

I want to encourage you to reflect on this subject today, and ask the Holy Spirit to help and guide you on doing not “whatever pleases you”, but everything that gives glory to Him.
Whatever we choose to do, there are consequences we must reap, and my hope is, as we begin a new year, that our choices will be wise and centered in the authority of the Word of God, fulfilling what the Lord Jesus taught us: “Your will be done.”

Wishing many blessings to you and your family!
