"SPIRITUAL SLAVERY"

“SPIRITUAL SLAVERY”

Beloved Unchained Family, highly estimated friends:

Let’s consider these two Bible verses:

Romans 6.16:
Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.”
2 Peter 2.19:
“They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you.”

It’s very common to hear people say that “we live in the Land of the free”, and however it is true that North America declared its freedom and independence in 1776 as a Nation, civilly speaking, when we see things under spiritual lenses, nevertheless, perspective changes dramatically, not only for America but for every single place in this planet. Why?? The answer lies in the verse we’ve just read: every human being can choose to be a slave of sin.

Scriptures are clear when showing that spiritual slavery has nothing to do with era, color of the skin, gender or ethnicity; it affects every human being whose lives and/or will haven’t been completely surrendered to Jesus Christ, and it impacts every soul that doesn’t choose to crucify the flesh and its desires, every single day.

As many of you know - especially members of our congregation, one of the three main values we chose to have as a pillar and foundation at Unchained Church is the “True Freedom in Christ”, which was carefully selected for a reason: we want to experience the abundant life that Jesus promised and has available to us, as we choose a life of liberty in the Lord, in opposition to being a slave of sin.

Regardless if the the nature of slavery is moral, relational or spiritual, or in any other form, the truth is that the choice of living in liberty depends exclusively on abiding in Jesus Himself. He warned us that “only those that the Son makes free, are free indeed”.

It’s always time for a serious, much needed, honest and thorough search within our soul in order to come up with a true answer if, indeed, we are truly free, or slaves of sin, and, if we have been enslaved and entangled in sin, repentance and committing ourselves to the obedience of the Word of God is the only route to an abundant life.

While it is true that we won’t be able to completely purge sin of our lives until we are fully glorified, it is possible “to obey God, which leads to righteous living”, as the text states.
Therefore, we all have a choice: free indeed, or slaves of sin. Whether we like it or not, it’s that simple, and it’s that serious. May the Lord enable us to choose obedience over sin, may the Holy Spirit guide us into a life of righteousness that will lead us into eternal life with God.
What are you going to choose to obey?? Remember: whatever you pick, according to the Bible, you are a slave of that.

Wishing peace, health and many blessings to your body and soul,

Pr. Joshua
